What is PMDD?

PMDD is a very severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which can cause many emotional and physical symptoms every month during the week or two before a period starts. It is sometimes referred to as ‘severe PMS’.

While many people who are able to have periods may experience some mild symptoms of PMS, if you have PMDD these symptoms are much worse and can have a serious impact on your life. Experiencing PMDD can make it difficult to work, socialise and have healthy relationships.

Dr Arianna di Florio, who is leading the research at NCMH, explained;

We study how genetic and environmental factors interact and make some women more likely than others to develop PMDD.

“We hope that a better understanding of the disease mechanisms will lead to better prevention and management strategies.”

Taking part in research

We are working on a new survey for women with PMDD. If you’d like to learn more about this research you can register your interest on our sign-up page.

Dr di Florio said; “We are extremely grateful to everyone who gives their time to participate in our studies – without their help the research simply would not happen.”
